Visiting Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, Monestary in the Belém District of Lisbon

I heard about the monastery from multiple people in the pastry class I took in Belém. It seemed that everyone was headed there after we finished our Pastéis de nata.

The Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is located in the Belém district of Lisbon, a flat area on the Tagus river with a lot to see and do. The Jerónimos Monastery has been classified as a National Monument since 1907 and, in 1983, it was classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The line for the monastery was long. I was lucky enough to see a couple from my pastry class already in line. They let me jump in with them after buying my tickets, which cut a chunk of time off of the wait for me. Tickets were 10 to enter for an adult.

The Refectory

The architecture is worth the visit. I enjoyed walking through the Refectory as it was a big room, with an intricate ceiling, and was fairly empty of people.

Fernando Pessoa is a Portuguese poet and his bodies lies in the monastery. The translation of the words on the stone is below.

TO BE GREAT, if whole: nothing Yours exaggerates or excludes. If all in every thing. Poe as you are The least you do. So in every lake the whole moon Shines, because it lives high. Ricardo Reis

Visiting the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos is worth it if you like museums or architecture. There are some great opportunities for photography and learning a little about history.
